I believe learning to be self-sustainable is important in our current unpredictable political and environmental climax. It is always good to practice some forms of self-sustainability in our daily lives even on good days. Firstly, I believe we can solely survive by whole plant-based diet. Not only we can get most of our nutrients from plants, fruits, legumes, grains, seeds, and no longer relying on animals’ products. Cultivating plants is much easier, simpler and kinder to Mother Earth than cultivating livestock. I also believe if we care for the Mother Earth, Mother Earth will also in return to care for us too.
If we have some land, perhaps can grow some roots plants such as sweet potatoes, yams which are both nutrition and can fill us well in time of food shortage.
If with limitation of space, microgreens such as simple sprouting at home is also a good start. Especially with Singapore humid and sunny weather, it is a perfect climate for growing microgreens all year round. The great thing about growing your own microgreens is being able to harvest them fresh, whenever you want to.
Next, fermentation of vegetable such as kim chi and sauerkrauts also allowed us to preserve food longer and enjoy the added benefits from the different strains of probiotics found after fermentation.
With the unwanted vegetables and fruits, we can also use them to make garbage enzymes. There are many benefits of using garbage enzyme especially in times of crisis from making into compost, homecare use, cleaning, purifying water, healing injuries to sanitisation of the polluted air. Not only we are reaping the benefits from usage, we are also reducing the garbage and pollution to the environments, we are doing our small little bits in caring for our Mother Earth.
Lastly, I believe the key to survive food shortage is a positive mindset and believing the ability to survive a food shortage with whole plant- based diet. We can equip us with the relevant knowledge and start practicing now in the good days, steps by steps, and incorporating to our daily lives. There are still many methods available to survive in the food shortage if we are willing to learn to prepare now.
