How to safeguard against digital thefts and scammers
LS202511Scammers always take the advantage of our weakness of human nature, too trusting and greed. Digital theft, personal information leaked, or being used for illegal purposes
Human Nature - Greed is one of the top factors why we always fall into scammer's trap
Once upon a time, i was also scammed.... Here is my story.
I wanted to rent a whole unit, a 3 room HDB unit at a cheap rate, so i went searching, online, carousel.
At that time the market rate was abt $2000
I found this advert which said, Shift in within 2 weeks, $1500, cooking allowed, aircon and furnishing included, near MRT, whole unit, no owner, no agent fee. 2 years rental tenancy agreement. 2 months deposit plus 1 month rental.
Seem like an attraction for me, because firstly, the rental amount is cheap, secondly, it is a 2 years rental tenancy which has all the furnishing and air con.
I decided to contact this owner, and of course, had an arranged viewing for the next day.
Upon viewing the place, i liked it and immediately put down a two month deposit plus one month rental which total up to $4500 and signed a paper which the owner created which says tenancy agreement. To me, it is all legit. And had agree to move in 2 weeks later. The owner also said that sh will pass me the keys upon shifting in. I agreed and was happy to settle everything.
Little did i know, i was down for hell, on the agreed date, i arranged for movers to help shift my stuff to the address.
Upon reaching, i knocked at the door, someone, a guy answered it. I told him i am moving in today, but all he looked was blank and told me, he is the owner and he didnt rent his place out.
I showed him the tenancy agreement and explained that i paid for deposit and rental, he told me that i should make a police report as the stated owner in the tenancy agreement was his last tenant that shifted out a week ago. He at the same time, showed me his ownership to the unit and called the police too.
I was stranded as at my belongings at arriving and i lost $4500 which is my hard earned money. I was angry, upset and didn't know what else can i do except to contact the police.
I hated myself for being greedy, for wanting something which is too good to be true. I managed to find a friend to let me stay for a few night and then decide on what to do.
From this incident, i learned that scammer will take advantage for human weakness, which is greed and cheap stuffs. And i learned from my mistake, not to trust to easily and thing that are too good to be true are not always right. Be caution.
